“… toda palavra sã”

“… toda palavra sã” brings together works meant to be read, seen, spoken, whispered, and (perhaps) danced, starting from its title, which appropriates a line from the song “Açaí” (1982) by Djavan. The song’s lyrics alternate between verses that are at once simple and dense, sometimes composed of a single word, sometimes of two or three. For the singer, despite claims that his composition might verge on nonsense, “everything makes complete sense” , for a word is capable of transporting us across many contexts—and this happens because we experience it through our own histories, desires, and associations.

Starting from the premise that the word is a fundamental component of language which, in its elementariness and its breadth of meanings, leads us to multiple experiences of the world, the works in “… toda palavra sã” foreground these poetic conditions through words that are painted, engraved, sculpted, forged, printed, written, silkscreened, drawn, stamped, appropriated, cut, glued, polished, twisted.

At Galeria Raquel Arnaud, the artistic practices of Almandrade, Antonio Manuel, Carla Chaim, Carlos Nunes, Carlos Zilio, Carmela Gross, Fabio Morais, Geórgia Kyriakakis, Iole de Freitas, Mira Schendel, Natalie Salazar, Shirley Paes Leme, Vitor Cesar, and Waltercio Caldas intertwine, creating temporalities and places for words, as well as for some of their constitutive proximities: the graphic sign, the pause, the mark, the trace.
