Counterpoints: Contemporary art at the Museu de Arte Sacra de São Paulo

The Museu de Arte Sacra de São Paulo (MAS/SP), a facility of the State Secretary of Culture, is inaugurating Contrapontos, a group show of site-specific artworks by nine artists who carry out interferences with the artworks featured in the institution’s long-term exhibition as well as with the environment, showing baroque and contemporary art side-by-side, comparing and contrasting them while creating new meanings. This show gives continuity to MAS/SP’s aim of opening its doors to more current proposals in the art circuit, allowing the museum’s frequent visitors to gain a wide range of cultural experiences while inviting different public segments to get to know the collection’s specificities.

To these ends, curator Nair Kremer invited a group of artists, consisting of eight individuals and one artists’ collective, to create works with total freedom, though without creating changes in the building itself, which is protected as an official heritage site. The group visited the spaces within the museum and each one chose a room of the collections in which to insert an intervention. The artists are: Alex Flemming, Geórgia Kyriakakis, Guto Lacaz, Luiz Hermano, Monique Allain, Núcleo de Arte-Educação do Museu de Arte Sacra de São Paulo, Renata Barros, Roberta Segura and Silvia Mharques.
